Our prosperity is tied to the land. We want to do everything we can to keep the country healthy and productive.
Cleaver’s was founded on the basis of caring for people, caring for animals, and caring for the land. This underpins our long-term partnerships with family farmers. It also explains why we’re champions for certified organic livestock production.
Caring for the land means making sure that we’re doing everything that we can for the environment while we’re busy producing high quality certified organic meat. The success of Cleaver’s relies on rain falling on natural grassland to provide feed for animals grazing naturally. We want to do everything we can to ensure that the long-term natural patterns that have produced this landscape remain as they have always been, keeping it healthy and productive.
This led us to look closely at our carbon footprint and how we manage it.
Our business involves everything from animals grazing in grassy paddocks to delivering products over the ‘final mile’ to stores. By calculating our footprint for everything we do between farming and final delivery Cleaver’s has undertaken the responsible challenge of knowing and managing the actual cost in carbon emissions.
Every CLEAVER’S product is carbon neutral. All packs will display the carbon neutral logo.
Being Carbon Neutral means there is compensation for everything Cleaver’s does that produces carbon emissions. Whatever we do between farming and delivering finished products is now compensated by something else that absorbs the same amount of carbon or more.
Becoming a 100% Carbon Neutral Meat company allows Cleaver’s to take responsibility for our footprint and our carbon emissions – across our entire business and every product we produce. Every product has a carbon footprint and we’ve chosen to ensure that it’s ‘neutralised’ by something that compensates for it.
The activities that compensate are called ‘carbon offsets’ or ‘carbon credits.’ A Carbon offset represents one Tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent Greenhouse gas that has been prevented from entering the atmosphere. These emissions are offset by a third party who reduces greenhouse gases on our behalf, through a Carbon Offset Project.
The Carbon Reduction Institute has comprehensively assessed our carbon credit provider to consider their accreditation; environmental additionality; financial additionality; leakage; permanence and additional social or economic benefits.
We source our carbon credits from projects that meet the above criteria. They are real, measurable, permanent, additional and independently verified. Cleaver’s only uses the International Gold Standard Certification of verifiable carbon credits as prescribed under the Kyoto Protocol.
How have we offset our emissions?
MYTRAH WIND POWER PROJECT – INDIA
Having begun the journey of measuring and monitoring our carbon emissions we have now offset our operations with the amazing renewable energy Mytrah Wind project in India. Our Carbon Neutrality is proven by best practice auditing and carbon emissions accounting methods.
Moving India’s rapidly expanding economy away from heavy polluting fossil fuels towards a clean energy alternative is an important development. Wind farms generate clean, renewable electricity while also providing important infrastructure and economic & social benefits for remote communities.
The Mytrah Wind project converts wind energy into electrical energy, across a number of wind farms, which have a combined installed capacity of 493.5 MW. This clean electricity is then exported to the Indian Grid, supplementing energy demands with an alternative to coal-fired electricity.
Wind Power Project Benefits
The clean power produced by the wind project displaces an equivalent amount of power from the grid. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions since the power it displaces comes from heavy polluting fossil fuel-fired power plants. Mytrah Wind, the project owner, runs a scheme to support the wellbeing of local communities. This includes investment to improve access to education, clean water and employment & opportunities for young people in the area. Mytrah also runs two community camps, together with UNICEF, empowering young women and educating them on their rights, creative abilities and skills in healthcare. A safe water project provides clean water, sanitation education and improved latrine services.

Cleaver’s is very proud to be supporting such a great project with our carbon credits, but we will continue finding ways to directly reduce carbon emissions from our company operations. People have been farming livestock the way we do for nearly 10,000 years. Cleaver’s is committed to ensuring an environment that can sustain it for at least that long again.
