FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Read through the answers to these frequently asked questions to find out more about certified organic farming, organic meat standards, our network of Certified Organic Australian farmers, our product range and much more.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE MEAT?

Sustainable meat is farmed in a way which doesn’t use up our precious natural resources. At Cleaver’s we are proud to lead the way in sustainable and organic meat. As organic producers, we understand that our future relies on sustaining productive land, healthy animals and a stable climate for generations to come. From regenerative farming practices to carbon neutral business processes and recyclable packaging, sustainability is part of our DNA.

WHAT IS CERTIFIED ORGANIC FARMING?

Certified Organic Farming means farming in a way that cares for the environment, without the use of any synthetic chemicals or other unnatural interventions such as added hormones.

All Cleaver’s organic meat products are certified organic, which means we take care of the environment and animal welfare, without genetically modified organisms (GMOs), antibiotics, added hormones or synthetic chemicals. Cleaver’s products are made without using any artificial colours or flavours

DOES CERTIFIED ORGANIC ALSO MEAN FREE RANGE AND GRASS FED?

Yes, the Australian Certified Organic standard requires livestock to ALWAYS be free range as part of the organic certification standard.

Grass fed and finished, all our Cleaver’s cattle and lambs are free to graze beautiful Australian organic pastures. Our certified organic chickens roam outside during the day, and roost safely in barns overnight. Happy animals, living as nature intended.

WHAT ARE THE STANDARDS FOR CERTIFIED ORGANIC MEAT?

You and your family can enjoy Cleaver’s products knowing they are Certified Organic. That means our meat is sourced from animals that are:

  • raised on free range farms that are audited annually to make sure they comply with organic standards
  • weaned using stress-free methods
  • fed on organic pastures and supplements
  • not exposed to synthetic pesticides or herbicides
  • never administered antibiotics
  • never administered growth hormones.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CERTIFIED ORGANIC GRASS FED MEAT?

The first health benefit is that there is nothing in the meat that you didn’t anticipate being there. Certified organic grass fed meat has

  • No synthetic chemical residues
  • No GMOs
  • No added hormones
  • No antibiotics

The second is that the nutrients are better for you. According to The Mayo Clinic, when compared to other types of beef, organic grass fed beef may have:

  • more heart healthy Omega-3 fatty acids
  • less total fat
  • more antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin E
  • more conjugated linoleic acid, a type of fat that’s thought to reduce heart disease and cancer risks.

ARE CLEAVER’S PRODUCTS HALAL?

No. Cleaver’s organic and free range products are not certified halal.

HOW DO I KNOW CLEAVER’S MEAT IS ORGANIC?

All our Certified Organic beef, lamb and chicken products carry the Australian Certified Organic bud logo. This tells you that our product has been approved by Australia’s leading organic certification body, Australian Certified Organic. To comply with these standards, all our animals have verified lifetime organic traceability and are audited annually.

HOW DO I KNOW CLEAVER’S MEAT IS FREE RANGE?

All Cleaver’s meat comes from livestock that are raised entirely in a free range environment.

Grass fed and finished, all our Cleaver’s cattle and lambs are free to graze beautiful Australian organic pastures. Our certified organic chickens roam outside during the day, and roost safely in barns overnight. Happy animals, living as nature intended.

WHAT DO THE ANIMALS EAT?

Our Cleaver’s livestock roam and graze on natural Aussie pastures from start to finish, with access to sunlight and fresh clean water.

Cleaver’s chickens are free to roam, enjoying a natural, certified organic diet.

WHERE ARE YOUR FARMS IN AUSTRALIA?

Cleaver’s meat comes from livestock raised on certified organic farms in Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

IS YOUR PACKAGING RECYCLABLE?

While we continue to improve the sustainability of our Cleaver’s packaging, not all of our packaging is currently recyclable.

Our new paper-based trays are made from 100% recyclable and sustainably-sourced materials, and these packs now contain 75% less plastic than equivalent packs using plastic trays and labels.

Our rigid plastic trays can be rinsed and recycled in your recycling bin. If soft plastic recycling is available in your area, then the plastic film used to keep your meat fresh and hygienic on some packs can also be recycled. Check with your local Council or Recycling Centre to find out what can be recycled in your area.
